WHY THE BOSTON KINGS??? 2019-20 Program and Tryout Info…

Here is a no-nonsense look at what makes The Boston Kings different than the rest…

WE BELIEVE IN TEAM:  We will not take more than 2 teams per grade (regardless of how many kids try out) and once we organize as teams for the spring and summer seasons, your son will have the same coaches and teammates for every practice, game, and tournament they attend.  Our kids learn their roles, learn how to play smart, and put the team first.  This is core to our philosophy and one of the reasons our teams can compete vs the top teams in the country.  It is also resonating with many high school and college coaches who are now seeking out our players for their lax IQ and team-first attitudes.

WE ARE VERY GOOD: At the youth level, we had 8 (of 10) teams finish #1 or #2 in The PLL spring league (made up of the top clubs in NE), and we compete at most of the top summer tournaments in New England and beyond.  Our high school teams play at top national fall and summer tournaments and do very well (2022’s won their first tournament this summer @ The Primetime Shootout).  We have countless alumni who went on to play at colleges across the country, and pride ourselves on the the strong brand we have built regionally and nationally.

WE PLAY IN AN ACTUAL LEAGUE:  Tournaments are great, but the opportunity to play in a competitive spring league has really been a game-changer for our program.  The Premier Lacrosse Spring League is the only exclusive, invite-only, club spring league in New England.  We are the only south shore club participating, and being able to play in full length games once a week versus great competition provides so many benefits that you simply can’t get playing in tournaments.  Also, very important to know our spring league does not conflict with town lax.

WE HAVE YOUR BACK: This is not a factory.  We believe that the relationship is just as important as the training.  We want our players to love the game, play in a supportive environment where they can gain confidence, and also be challenged by invested coaches that they know care about them.  Most of our players have been with us for years.  We get to know them…  We know what they do well, what they need to work on, and how to get the best out of them.

WE HAVE AMAZING COACHES WHO LIVE AND COACH IN OUR COMMUNITY:  I could go on all day on this one, but I would put our coaches up against any club out there.  And, I think what sets us apart is our coaches are actively coaching in our communities, so they are more connected to the players/families and more committed to the success of the program.  Here are the lead coaches for the upcoming 2019-20 year (these are the lead coaches, there are other heads and assistants not listed):

  • Kings Directors: Chris McGuirk, Greg Traynor, and Greg Clements (click here for bios)
  • 2028/29: Greg Lally : Thayer HOF and AA, Boston College Lax, Norwell Youth Lax coach.
  • 2027: Mark Nutley : Long coaching resume, currently coaching lax (and football) at Hingham High. Teacher and Marshfield Youth lax coach/director.
  • 2026: John Todd : Hingham High Head Coach.  Winningest coach in MA history.  More coaching accolades than I can even list…

  • 2023, 22, & 21: Brian Fitzgibbons (High School Director) : Played at Bowdoin College, coached at every level for over 15 years. Currently coaches at Mass Maritime and Irish National Team.

Other South Shore Head Varsity Coaches Who Coach With Us: Shaun Tierney (Hanover Head Varsity), Adam Tragellis (Weymouth Head Varsity), James Beaudoin (Cohasset Head Varsity), Derek Weckbacher (Silver Lake Head Varsity), Kevin Morash (Pembroke Head Varsity), Chris Perry (Plymouth North Head Varsity), Brian Connerty (Hanover Var Asst), Devin Schneiderbauer (Hingham Var Asst), Mike Smith (Mass Mass Maritime Asst)

WE DON’T COST AS MUCH AS MOST:   There is a lot of misinformation out there regarding what the true cost of your player’s all-in tuition, fees, and costs are; so please do your homework when looking into your options.  The simple fact is, we include more in our tuition and cost a lot less.   WE ARE ALL INCLUSIVE! No extra fees for fall-ball, winter leagues, or spring program.   It is all included in your tuition.  Here is a general outline of what is included next year:

  • Fall: 8+ skills & 2 tournaments
  • Winter: Over 40 local winter skills options
  • Spring: 3 practices and 8 games (no conflict with town)
  • Summer: Teamcamp, practices, and 3 tournaments

All of the above is INCLUDED in our offering and we are still less expensive than most (in some cases more than $1000 less expensive).

WE ARE THE PERFECT SIZE: Big enough that we can have winter skills almost every night of the week in different indoor venues (Hanover, Cohasset, Plymouth, and Braintree), but small enough that our coaches and directors know every single one of our players and families.

WE ARE NOT GOOD AT HYPERBOLE:  We do the best we can to get the word out about our club, but we just are not very good at bragging about our accomplishments or spinning them into some grandiose tale of unmatched dominance.  Other clubs may do this to make you feel as though if your son is a good lacrosse player, he has to play there; but not us.  Fact is, we are very good.  Our teams can (and do) compete with anyone in the country, and almost 2/3rds of our high school players from the last 6 years have gone on to play in college.  But, there are a lot of good club teams out there, and we just don’t focus on it or let that be the defining characteristic of our club.  We focus on the training, the curriculum, the connection; and let the results speak for themselves.
